The rise of the Small Player?

Saw an interesting analysis on MOTD where more of the top teams were playing the smaller, more skilful players rather than the 6 foot plus units.
Man U were the only team full of 6 footers.
Players like Silva, Sterling, Mane, Salah, Pedro, Hazard, Kante and Ozil.
We have Lanzini and hopefully Grady can continue his good start.
Do you think the game will continue to develop like this?
And name a decent short, skilful player from years ago.

I was amazed the Hodges went nowhere.
Head and shoulders above everyone else in our year in the country.....and that was in the middle of the 'golden generation'.

I well remember Don Revie’s Leeds having the poison dwarves Collins, Bremner and Giles playing in his midfields. They were skilful, energetic and highly aggressive allowing no teams to physically dominate them. Though back in the day they were not regularly competing in midfield with some of the big African units the leagues are full of.

The game changes all of the time.
In ten years time; it could be a return to 4-4-2 with a big bloke and midget cunt partnership in attack. Who knows?

Lee hodges is one of my very good mates.
Was a superb player, literally took the piss at every level of schoolboy football.
His year at my school had some absolutely superb players. Think they won pretty much everything.
Shame his knees were fucked and he loved a booze.

I've been coaching kids football for 15 years including doing some sessional work for pro clubs (not WHU).
They still have a "profile" they look at in terms of height, strength, growth potential. The best kids team I coached from the age of 6 onwards more than half the team went to academies. The best kid was a small (relatively, compared to other academy kids) Spanish kid who controlled every match, brilliant attitude, tough as old boots. We'd have loads of scouts at every match, I'd regularly have scouts talking about how good he was all match. At the end of the match, they'd say "I want the big African one to come for a trial". Eventually after all the other best kids had left, this kid got signed by Charlton.
This summer turning 16 he had offers from various Premier League clubs but instead went on trial at Bayern Munich, Benfica and somewhere in Spain, I can't remember which, maybe Valencia. His parents concluded Benfica offered him the best opportunity to develop at a high level so he rejected more money from Premier League to go to Portugal.
Point being, he was with me for 5 years, long after most of the other players had been signed by Academies. Only one of the others stayed with Academies, every other one was released because ultimately they were strong and fast but not quite technically good enough.

There was a phase in the 90s when teams were obsessed by 6ft plus outhouses in midfield

This is probably the result of most teams these days playing with inside forwards. Shortarse = lower centre of gravity = better balance = more effective at changing direction quickly.
Kante is the only odd one out there as traditionally his role is taken up by a big unit.

Little un's are not allowed now to be booted by big un's ... so little un's will now flourish in the game... imagine what Diego would now do not having hatch it men trying to decapitate him every game...
